Fish Stocking at Central Highlands

Fishcare Central Highlands stock Lake Dewar and Murphys Dam so students can fish the venues and some (if they are lucky) may catch their first large Rainbow Trout. This year, Bill Wright (Fishcare volunteer) and Frank Gray from Ballarat Hatchery stocked Murphys dam with 150 Yearling Rainbow Trout.  Lake Dewar was also stocked with 250 Yearling Rainbow trout by Fishcare volunteers Terry Wells, John Smeaton & Sam Stewart and the YMCA also contributed 200 rainbow trout yearlings.

Schools that are involved in the “Get Hooked, it’s fun to fish” program get a choice of what venue they would like to visit to try their luck at catching these fish and taking them home for dinner!  In 2017 – 2018 Central Highlands were able to help local schools hire buses to travel to the fishing venues via a successful grant application received from Ballarat City Council. Fishcare Central Highlands are very excited to announce that in 2018 – 2019, the group will continue to assist with transport costs for local schools via another successful grant application.
