Nagle College – Eco Warriors

For over 10 years, Fishcare East Gippsland has supported the Nagle College Year 9, Eco-warrior science students. The Mitchell River flows through the edge of the school grounds and originally was heavily impacted and degraded over with major loss of native vegetation and bank erosion.

Science Teacher – Andrea Savage created the Eco-warriors program over 10 years with the emphasis on the ecology of the river, along with an outdoor focus on how to improve this iconic river. Over ten years of hard work, the students have restored this section back to the original rainforest and created a healthy ecosystem once again. There is even a Rainforest Walking Track and this school program has won many awards including a Victorian Landcare award.

Fishcare East Gippsland supports the Eco-warrior students since the program commenced by conducting an incursion and a fishing excursion every term on this river to give students an insight to what fish live in this river and why sustainable fishing practices is so important to the health of our river systems.
