South West Update
In the South West we have been working closely with the Glenelg-Hopkins CMA recently undertaking some Fishy Fun sessions along the bank of the Merri River at Platypus Park in Warrnambool. We provided some educational fishing games and the CMA provided the water bugs which put together was a great mix of activities and had participants engaged for ages. In June we will be teaming up with the CMA again to provide some children’s activities at the final weigh in of the Hopkins River leg of the Vic Bream Classic. We look forward to continue working with the CMA into the future.
Our side project ‘The Plastic Free Alliance’ has been busy finishing old and starting new projects recently. Our artwork Modern Midden by Rachel Peters and funded by the Glenelg-Hopkins CMA through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme has now been permanently placed at The Bluehole in Warrnambool. This artwork is now a constant reminder to visitors of the problem with plastic litter across the world. We can now promote our next project thanks to funding by Regional Arts Victoria and Warrnambool City Council. Artist Alara Harrison will be painting a mural on the wall of the Bluehole toilets in Warrnambool that will depict sea animals swimming around in plastic litter. It is planned to have this completed by the end of the year.
The South West group would like to welcome our newest members from the Port Fairy Angling Club. This group of anglers do a fantastic job of providing an angling experience for school children and community members in Port Fairy and we can’t wait to work with them to provide the Fishcare experience across the South West.
