Volunteer Profile – Justin Harzmeyer
I first started volunteering with Fishcare in the South West to help me gain workplace skills while studying an Environmental Science degree (Fisheries Management and Aquaculture) at Deakin University in Warrnambool. 14 years later I’m still volunteering but it’s to see the look of excitement on a young persons face when they catch their first fish and then release it back into the water. It’s so important that the next generation of anglers take ownership of our fisheries and learn how to look after them and appreciate them. I would highly recommend anyone with an interest in recreational fishing or the aquatic environment to join Fishcare and help spread the message of sustainable angling. People with a bit of extra time such as those that have retired and can share their knowledge and expertise to help regional groups operate or students that want to gain experience and build a network of professionals currently working in the field, can do so much for Fishcare while benefiting themselves.
