Wild Seafood Harvest – Mallacoota
The Wild Harvest Seafood festival is funded by the Victorian Fisheries Authority and the East Gippsland Shire and run by the local community who do an amazing job bringing together different partners to highlight the unique abundance and variety of seafood in East Gippsland.
On the 13th and 14th of November, Fishcare East Gippsland travelled to Mallacoota to support this event as requested by the local committee.
On Saturday, a big community market was held with Fishcare EG having a stall with the local VFA beside them. Jenny and 2 Fishcare volunteers spent the morning talking to the public about what our organisation does and promoting the two big fishing activities held over the weekend.
On Saturday evening, a Fishcare Twilight fishing event was held at the Mallacoota Wharf to give children and families the opportunity to experience fishing.
Over 20 children attended with lots of fish caught. VFA Officers, Lauren McDermott and Mattias Baenziger came along to support Fishcare and always great to have them onboard and appreciate their help and input with such busy events.
The next morning, a “Come and Try fishing” workshop was held and once again a big turn up and some lovely fish were caught during the fishing session. Mattias from Mallacoota VFA came along once again and helped with this session.
Lovely to see some older people who were travelling around Australia come along to this clinic to learn more about fishing and have the skills to be able to catch their own fish during their travels. This session saw some lovely fish caught with a bream over 40 cm and most children caught a fish which kept them engaged and they loved returning the undersize fish back into the water.
A great successful event to be part of and hopefully back next year.
