Come & Try Fishing Day – St Leonards Reserve.
The Geelong and Bellarine group got to witness the excitement and joy of novice anglers as they tried their luck at St Leonards Reserve on the 10th of January 2024. This event aimed to provide participants with a solid foundation in the basics of fishing, both practically and theoretically.
The day kicked off with a focus on understanding the rules and regulations governing recreational fishing. Participants were given valuable insights into responsible angling and the importance of conservation, setting the stage for a day of learning and enjoyment.
Fishcare Victoria’s team, along with the support of volunteers and members from the Bellarine Pirates Angling Club, guided attendees through the essentials of fishing. From rigging and casting a fishing rod to identifying the right rigs for fresh and saltwater, participants were equipped with the fundamental skills needed to become confident anglers.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the hands-on experience of catching fish. With a total of 13 fish caught, the event showcased the success of the participants’ newfound knowledge and skills. The focus was on targeting carp, an introduced species known for its abundance and ease of catch.
Despite the negative impacts of carp on our environment and native fish species, the decision to target them during the event was intentional. Carp provides an excellent opportunity for novice anglers to hone their skills – they are easy to catch, abundant, and can grow to impressive sizes. This targeted approach allowed participants to learn the art of making rigs, casting, and fighting fish, creating a valuable and repeatable learning experience.
The event concluded on a high note, with participants expressing their gratitude for the hands-on and simplified approach to fishing education.
As Fishcare celebrate the success of this Come & Try Fishing Day, they invite everyone to stay tuned for more upcoming events across the state.
