Fishcare Geelong and Bellarine’s Successful Fishing Day at St Helens Jetty
On a sunny day at St Helens Jetty on Friday the 12th of January, situated on the Western side of Corio Bay, Fishcare Geelong and Bellarine groups hosted a highly successful Come & Try Fishing Day. The event drew participants from far and wide, with some traveling over an hour from Melbourne to take part in the day.
The day began with participants immersing themselves in the rules and regulations governing our fisheries, ensuring that everyone was well-versed in responsible angling practices. From learning how to cast and rig up a fishing rod to understanding the best baits for successful saltwater fishing, attendees gained valuable insights into the intricacies of the sport.
Fishcare’s Geelong and Bellarine Facilitator, Mitch McMaster, led the event with the support of an enthusiastic army of volunteers. Together, they guided participants through the essentials of fishing, sharing their knowledge and expertise. The focus of the day was catching snapper, and the participants were in for a treat.
Using garfish as the bait of choice, participants successfully reeled in a total of 9 pinkie snapper. Although the fish weren’t large, the small juvenile snapper provide a great experience for budding angler. The picturesque St Helens Jetty, combined with the cooperative weather of a light easterly wind and a toasty warm 31 degrees Celsius, created the perfect backdrop for a day of fishing.
The success of the event left participants eager for more, and Fishcare Geelong and Bellarine are excited to announce additional Come & Try Fishing events throughout January. Anglers of all levels are encouraged to check the events tab on the Fishcare website for details on upcoming events, ensuring they don’t miss the opportunity to join the next exciting fishing day.
