FishAbility in the Regions!

Recently the Melbourne Fishcare group provided some fishing workshops to the regional community
of Swan Hill as a part of the FishAbility program which aims to increase the active involvement of
Victorians living with a disability into fishing.

I was joined by our Volunteer Eric who helped us land our first and largest fish of day 1 at Lake Boga
which was a European Carp, an introduced species which we ethically dispatched and removed from
the local waters. The remainder of the program saw a few small Redfin caught by participants, some
of which was their first fish caught, ever! Much to everyone’s delight, the weather was perfect, with
many participants taking a seat and enjoying their lunch by the water. The program was well
received by the community and is a reminder of the potential Fishcare Victoria has to expand into
regional areas of Victoria.

The Victorian Fisheries Authority will soon be hosting a Fishing for All day in Shepparton on Saturday
May 21st which will similarly provide opportunities for fishing to regional communities. Fishcare
and its volunteers will be there on the day with adaptive fishing gear options for all ages and
abilities.
